I was invited out to visit a private island in Connecticut called the Griswold Island. Nine families live on this island that is self sufficient. The islanders use solar power and wind power to operate their homes. It was a great evening that started with a heavy fog. The fog furtunately burnt off and we were left with some great views. Wow - gorgeous!!!
I lived there in the summers as a child my grandmother Fern owned the house, she has since passed and our family sold the property. I remember the fresh wild strawberries in the yard and we had an outhouse and had to fetch water in the mornings at the well to wash and cook. In the evenings when it was too dark we would piddle in a pot on the front porch so our parents didn’t have to take us around back in the dark to the smelly outhouse. We would set lobster and crap traps in the mornings and go claming in the evenings. Then we would feast! On beautiful warm days my grandmother would take us climbing on the rocks and we would have a picnic and talk about BIG FOOT for there was a BIG FOOT imprint in one of the rocks. She would tell us he really existed and we believed every word. We would play cards with our neighbors and have camp fires outside at night roasting marshmallows. Fourth of July was spectacular and I do not recall in all my life prettier fire works! When we would leave the island I would throw my teddy bear in the water to stall everyone just so we could stay just a moment longer. Griswold was an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of our hectic lives. When I was 4 years old we spent an entire summer and had to stay through the fall. During our stay we had a Hurricane and it was very scary! When I was 16 I visited my grandmother on the Island and she had just installed a beautiful small bathroom in the house and we no longer would use the outhouse. That was the last time I visited and Griswold Island will never forget all of the wonderful times spent on the Island. Props to Griswold, you bring back wonderful memories!!!!
